breastANGELS is a not for profit organisation that aims to provide funding of breast reconstruction surgery for women post breast cancer and preventative mastectomies with/without reconstruction for women at high risk to develop breast cancer.

breastANGELS was founded by Sharon & Reid Tregoning.  In 2004, Sharon discovered that due to a previously undisclosed family history she was at high risk to develop breast cancer.

She chose to undergo a double preventative mastectomy with immediate reconstruction using stomach tissue and this occurred in May 2008.  The surgery lasted approx 11 hours, she was in hospital for 10 days and it took approx 3 months for her to be mostly recovered.  Her risk has gone from a possible 80% down to around 1%. 

Even with top private health insurance the procedure cost over $6,000 out of pocket – an amount that would be out of reach for a lot of women.  Sharon & Reid also discovered that even for women who have had breast cancer, if they wish to reconstruct, they too have out of pocket expenses.  In both scenarios there is currently a minimum 2-4 year wait under the public health system.  They chose to start breastANGELS and change this picture.

breastANGELS also supports women in their decision making process about reconstruction by providing ANGELS – Advice, Nurturing, Guidance, Empathy, Love, Support.  At breastANGELS we do not want to create a culture of ‘if you do not reconstruct you are not normal’.  It is about empowering women to make the decision that is right for them.  And as we know, some women are unable to reconstruct due to their treatment.

Sharon also wrote a book about her experience, with a chapter contributed by Reid, to assist others in their decision making process.  The book is called “Accepting With Grace – Mastectomy & Reconstruction, My Choice Before Breast Cancer” and is available through breastANGELS.
